CENTER FOR LEGAL ASSISTANCE FOR WOMEN ZENICA According to legal regulations in force, Center for Legal Assistance for Women Zenica is registered as citizens association by the decision of the Ministry of Justice of Ze-DO Canton no. 08-72-24/96 dated on 17/10/1996, acting as an independent, non-governmental, apolitical and non-profit organization.
Center for Legal Assistance for Women was established by graduated lawyers from Zenica, in order to help women in post war period in realization and protection of their fundamental human rights, especially women’s rights. The basic objectives of the Center are the following:
• Organized offering free legal aid to women having a problem in realization of the rights guaranteed by law,
• Ensuring legal and psychological support to women in the exercising their rights,
• Promoting women’s rights in all areas of acting,
• Raising awareness of women in all areas about their real status and need of harmonizing the one with general human standards,
• Educating and informing women about fundamental rights and mechanisms of self-protection in the cases of violation of their rights, pointing out in the public the problems related to the respecting women’s rights and proposing solutions for their overcoming,
• Educating students of law about practical law application,
• Educating young girls about feminism, sex discrimination, prevention of violence,
• Advocating increased participation of women in decision making bodies aiming at building permanent mechanism for the achieving satisfying level of respecting women’s human rights,
• Supporting preventive programs development in order to protect women from domestic violence, trafficking in women and economic exploitation,
• Monitoring domestic and international legislation,
• Supporting development of women’s network for more effective protection of the women’s human rights,
• Cooperating with other non-governmental and governmental organizations dealing with women’s issue.
In Zenica-Doboj Canton covering area of 3950 square meters with cca 420,000 inhabitants – more than 60% of them are women – there is no one organization offering free legal aid to women, so our work is of special importance for the women’s rights protection.
Team of 20 women, lawyers and other educational profile, realizes activities of the Centre by permanent engagement of certain number of volunteers.
